Black History Month. Started back in 1926 by African-American historian, Carter G. Woodson who conceived the idea to declare a Negro History Week, later becoming Black History Month when America celebrated its bicentenary in 1976. February was chosen because it coincides with both President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave, Frederick Douglass’s birthday month.
