​British colonies​

The following countries are still administered by the United Kingdom: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands.

DIASPORA

Danish colonies

​​​The Virgin Islands of the U.S.A., St Thomas, St John, and St Croix, formerly possessions of Denmark are under the U.S.A.’s control since 1917 and are classified as an unincorporated organized territory.

French colonies

​Former French Caribbean colonies Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyane, Reunion voted to be overseas departments of France with equal rights to that of the main departments on the continent since 1948. They are called ‘départements d'outre-mer’ or ‘DOM’. The island of Saint Barthélemy became an overseas collectivity in 2007.

Dutch colonies

​Aruba and Dutch Antilles (Bonnaire and Curaçao) agreed to remain tied to the Netherlands. Aruba‘s full independence was stopped in 1990 after 4 years of self-governance. Only Suriname achieved independence.

Canada

​Separated by two dominant languages French and English, Canada has enjoyed its independence since 1918.
